why albania
ALbania history
Albania suffered under the most extreme form of communism between 1945 - 1991. In 1967 it became the first country in the world to declare itself as an atheist state.
The Islam that was practised by Muslims within Albania during this time experienced profound changes and persecution.
Places of worship were forced to close down with religious practices being banned resulting in punishment of people who did not comply. The effects and legacy of persecution through forced de-islamization of society resulted in people being left with minimal to almost no knowledge of Islam.
Albania is also one of the poorest countries in Europe. The transition from communist rule to a democratic republic has disrupted economic growth. As a result, household incomes are below minimally accepted standards with families struggling to meet basic needs for essentials such as food, clothing and heating. Communities in Albania have been starved of funds with poor public services and inaccessible social services.
Over the past two decades, Rahma Mercy have been striving to re-sanctify and revive Islam as well as provide care for the poor and needy in Albania through all its projects. Although as a charity we have, Alhamdulilah, made a positive impact, there is still so much more to be done.
